American culture has been strongly influenced by Italy, its art, its culture, and its foods almost from the beginning of our nation. Where would our own cities be without good Italian restaurants. Pizza may be the one food that is loved by all Americans everywhere, no matter what age, and, of course, it's a staple in the diet of college students and has been for many generations. Florence, in Tuscany, is the embodiment of all of those influences.

For an unforgettable vacation, a trip to Florence with a focus on learning more about its culture or even more specifically about its art and its foods must be at the top of most Amercans' priority lists.

Florence is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Established by Julius Caesar in 59 BC, its style suggests an army camp with the main streets meeting at today's Piazza della Repubblica. Governance has changed frequently through the many years of its history. However, in about 1000 AD, with the choice of Florence as his home, Margrave Hugo ushered in the Golden Age of Florentine art.

Eventually, however, the Medicis, bankers to the Pope, won out over their enemies, the Albizzi family, and established a peaceful, productive society based largely on the wool industry. A republican government emerged in 1494. Historic Florentines such as Savonarola and Machiavelli have lent their names to philosophical theories and to literature and history.

A famous café, the Giubbe Rosse, was founded by two Germans, the Reininghaus brothers, in the early years of the 20th century. Located where all the town's major streets meet, the Piazza della Repubblica, this café has long been a gathering place for literati and intellectuals.

If you also want to learn to cook the extraordinary foods that characterize Tuscany, there are many cooking courses in Florence. Even if your interest is at the novice level you will be welcomed in one of the many professional schools in Florence.

Single-day, multiple-day, or week-long cooking classes in Florence are often available along with wine tours. Accommodations can also be obtained for your stay there. Check the Internet and take a look at the websites of the most recognized Italian language and cooking schools.

Other possibilities for cooking classes, if you would like to be able to cook Italian dishes for your friends and family, you can take a professional cooking course: in Florence are available both highly professionalized cooking courses for beginners who want to work in the culinary field and experienced chefs looking to expand their knowledge of Italian cuisine, with the option of internship placement.

On the other hand, if it's art courses you're interested in, there are also many art courses in Florence. You can find classes in the history of Italian art, hands-on drawing and painting, watercolor, jewelry and even fashion. Also, if your art form is photography, there are many photography courses in Florence.

The culture of Italy is fascinating, and it would take a lifetime to learn all it has to offer. However, there are actually many Italian culture courses in Florence.
